The London Olympic Games set many milestones, for attendance, cost-savings and sheer entertainment value. But even more significant than these was how the Games placed environmental considerations at the top of the agenda at all times. Ensuring that sustainability was at the heart of the 2012 Games, the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG), made a promise that Olympic Park would be a ‘blueprint for sustainable development’.
Pico’s activation of the ACER Pavilion at the games helped London bring this promise to life. Through adherence to the letter and spirit of LOCOG’s strict ecological charter, Pico developed a unique method of digital connectivity to connect visitors with every element of the ACER experience, both at the event and with later reprise at home or office. Pico kept the environment uppermost in our teams’ minds and designed our approach around the ‘3Rs’ - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
The basic premise of this approach was one of carbon footprint minimisation, and keeping energy usage and costs down was a top priority. All materials, substrates and finishes were specified by Pico’s design team to be either recyclable or obtained from sustainable resources, and wastage was minimised as much as possible.
Being environmentally-friendly did not present a big challenge: our forward-looking PicoEco mandate mirrored the chief principles of LOCOG’s environmental charter, proving that great minds think alike!
